New research has stated that acupuncture would be the safe and effective treatment for children with chronic pain. There is no sufficient evidence on the efficiency of pain relieving therapies in treating children with chronic pain.
Generally, chronic pain lasts for minimum 12 weeks. Notably, around 20-35% of children and teenagers are suffering from chronic pain.
Treating adults with chronic pain is difficult but treating children with the similar condition seems more challenging. Health care professionals often worry to provide specific treatments to youngsters because of their vulnerability during growth and due to its associated health risks.
Children with chronic pain may not be able to communicate effectively depending on the age. Therefore, the latest study revealed that Acupuncture is one the safest treatment for chronic pain in children.
Acupuncture is used in traditional Chinese medicine that involves stimulating certain pressure points in the body, most commonly the insertion of thin needles through the skin.
The study looked at the effect of acupuncture directly in children rather than examining data from adults. This approach is important as children experience pain in different ways compared to adults.
The study has overseen 55 children and adolescents aged 7-20 years who all had chronic pain. Every participant has attended 8 sessions in which they have received a personalized acupuncture treatment with each treatment lasting around 30 minutes.
With the help of Adolescent Pediatric Pain Tool (APPT), participants rated their pain and nausea prior to treatment. The APPT asks patients to tell pain areas throughout the body outline diagram and demonstrate pain intensity through various words like no pain and worst pain.
The researchers found that participants reported a reduction in pain in all the entire 8 sessions and from the initial session to final session, great pain reduction is reported in every session. They found that patients experienced significant improvements in overall health in social, emotional and educational problems.
Finally, researchers suggested that acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment option for children suffering with chronic pain.
