With the intent to encourage people to donate organs and make them understand the importance of organ donation, the government and various organizations is celebrating organ donation day in India on 13th August of every year. Notably, over 500 people waiting for organ donor are dying each year.
There are around 123,193 people waiting for lifesaving organ transplants in the US, of which 101,662 await kidney transplants. And, in India there is a need of around 175000 kidneys, 50,000 hearts and 50,000 livers for transplantation. But unfortunately, there are only 5000 kidney transplants in 180 centres, 400 livers in 25 centres and 10-15 hearts in very few centres are done each year.
Organ Donation Statistics
On an average, there are
- More than 3,000 new patients are waiting for kidneys each month
- 12 people die each day while waiting for a kidney transplant
- 1 person will be added to the list for every 14 minutes
- In 2014, around 4,270 patients died while waiting for a kidney transplant.
Why Organ Donation?
Reportedly, over 5 lakhs of Indians are dying each year just because of the organ failure. One organ donor can save over 8 lives by donating organs that are good in condition. Both the organ transplantation and donation can be done successfully with the help of immuno-suppressive drugs since they can increase the survival rate of organ recipients. But due to lack of awareness regarding which organs to donate, where to donate and how to get registered for organ donation, many people are not showing interest to donate organs.
