Yellow nails not only look bad, but they might also mean that all is not well with the body. There are a lot of reasons for having yellow nails. You can have it due to poor lifestyle habits such as smoking or you can have it due to excessive use of nail polish. However, there are a few homemade fixes that can help you to get rid of the yellow nails easily. Many of these remedies are quite easily available, but one has to continue them for a while for best possible results.

Home Remedies to Remove Yellow Stain from Nails

There are various reasons for yellow nails. If you know the reason for the problem you will be able apply these home remedies more successfully.


For yellow stain on nails caused by fungal infections, Listerine is a good cure. It contains menthol, thymol, eucalyptol among other things which are antifungal and can get rid of fungus infections on your nails. You can also use a mixture of vinegar and Listerine, and soak your nails in the solution. This should be done regularly for at least a few days to see the effects.

Lemon Juice

This is another useful remedy for improving the health of the nails. It is often called “natural bleaching agent”. All you need to do is put the juice in a cup or bowl and soak your nails in it for a few minutes. Continue this process over a few days, and you will definitely see improvement.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Another simple way of removing yellow stain from the nails is to dip and soak them in water mixed with hydrogen peroxide. After soaking the nails for one or two minutes, scrub the solution off your nails using an old toothbrush, and then wash your nails and use some cuticle moisturizer.

Tea Tree Oil

This can also be used very effectively in order to reduce the yellow stain from the nails. This remedy works best of the cause of yellowing is related to infection that is caused by fungus. Apply tea tree oil on your fingernails, preferably with a dropper, and then wash your hands in moderately warm water. Continue this for at least a few months. Alternatively, you can also mix it with olive oil and apply on the fingernails. This should be done twice daily for some months.

Baking Soda

This item can also be used for curing this problem. Mix it with Hydrogen Peroxide, and apply on the fingernails. Let it dry for a few minutes and then wash your hand in lukewarm water. Also you can make a paste with baking soda, lemon juice and olive oil and with the help of a toothbrush apply them on the fingernails. After a few minutes wash the paste off with lukewarm water.

These home remedies are quite effective, but you have to be patient with them. Generally home remedies take some time to show their action. It is advisable to continue the process for a few weeks for the best possible result in removing the yellow stain.
