Aorta is the main supplier of blood in your body and is one of the largest blood vessels in your body. Aorta carried the blood from your heart down to your abdomen, legs and pelvis. The wall of the aorta generally swells or bulges out like a small balloon when it becomes weak. This condition of swelling is referred as abdominal aortic aneurysm.

A rupture in the abdominal aortic aneurysm can cause a life threatening condition. The risk mainly depends on the size and rate at which the aneurysm is growing. Careful monitoring the aneurysm is required to know whether any surgery can be planned if necessary and to know how it affects the other functions.

Abdominal Aortic aneurysm Symptoms

Generally people suffering with abdominal aortic aneurysm do not show any visible symptoms as the aneurysm often grows very slowly. In few rare cases the aneurysms will never rupture without showing any symptoms. In other cases the aneurysm develops more quickly and makes it difficult for the blood to flow easily.

As the aneurysm enlarges, you may notice the following conditions:

  • A pulsating feeling near your navel
  • Constant abdominal pain or on the side of your abdomen
  • Back pain
  • Pain spreading from abdomen or back to pelvis, legs or buttocks
  • Clammy or sweaty skin
  • Increased heart rate
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Shock

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Causes

Mostly the aneurysm occurs in the part of your aorta that is in your abdomen. The exact cause of abdominal aortic aneurysm is unknown. There are certain factors that are responsible for abdominal aortic aneurysm. They are:

  1. Excess tobacco use

Cigarette smoking or excess amount of tobacco intake can increase your risk of developing aortic aneurysm. Excess smoking can damage your aorta and can make your aorta walls weak.

  1. Atherosclerosis

Atherosclerosis is a condition in which the hardening of arteries is experienced. This condition appears when the fat and other substances build up on the lining of your blood vessels. Atherosclerosis generally increases the risk of aneurysm in most of the cases.

  1. High blood pressure

High blood pressure usually cause damage to the aorta wall and makes it weak thus, increasing the risk of abdominal aortic aneurysm in your body.

  1. Inflammation of blood vessels

Blood vessel diseases generally results in the inflammation of blood vessels. The risk increases when the blood vessels become inflamed.

  1. Aortic infection

Infections such as bacterial and fungal may also results in aortic aneurysm in your body.

  1. Trauma

Trauma such as car accident or injury may also lead to abdominal aortic aneurysm.

  1. Heredity

In few rare cases the risk of developing abdominal aortic aneurysm increases when you have had a family history of aneurysm.

Risk factors of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

The common factors associated with abdominal aortic aneurysm include:

  • Age older than 65 years of age
  • Tobacco usage
  • Men are more at risk of aneurysm when compared to women
  • White people are higher risk of aneurysm
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Other aneurysm
  • High blood pressure

It is recommended to get yourself diagnosed when you observe any symptoms related to aneurysm. Early diagnosis helps in early treatment and can also help in avoiding the complications associated with abdominal aortic aneurysm.
