If you think dehydration was only caused due to long durations of going without drinking water, then you are mistaken. Our bodies are made up of 60% water and losing even 1.5% of this quantity can make us feel dehydrated.

This can further lead to drop in energy levels, cognitive function and change in mood. Besides the usual causes of feeling dehydrated, there are many other surprising causes, a list of which has been given below along with the possible ways of dealing with them:

Diabetes

You will be surprised to know that having diabetes can be one of the reasons why you may feel the lack of water in the body. When the sugar level in the blood is high, our body tries to get rid of glucose through increased urine output and this can make one feel thirsty more often. The best way to deal with this is to contact your doctor and get a treatment for controlling sugar level.

Your Period

Another cause of dehydration which may surprise you is having your period. During this time of the month, hormonal changes in the body may make you feel dizzy and weak. It is thus advisable to drink more water during this time to stay hydrated and to avoid depletion of fluid levels due to heavy flow of blow from the body.

Prescription Medicines

If you have been feeling unusually dehydrated lately, then one reason for this could be the prescription medicines that you are taking. There are many medicines which act as diuretics and may increase the urine output from the body, thus making you feel dehydrated more often. To avoid feeling dehydrated due to prescription medications, make sure you have extra glasses of water on the days you take the medicines.

Low-Carbohydrate Diet

When the body is running low on carbohydrate, it tends to feel more dehydrated because carbs are stored in the body along with water. When one experiences a drop in carbohydrates, he/she may experience a drop in fluids as well. On the other hand, whole carbohydrates like whole grain pasta, oatmeal and others soak up a lot of water during the process of cooking and can help boost the hydration level in your body and are thus recommended.

Stress

You will be highly surprised to know that one reason behind feeling dehydrated is being stressed. If you are someone who has been stressed about something lately, then chances are that you may also feel thirsty more often as well. What happens is that under stress, the adrenal glands pump out the stress hormones but this organ is also responsible for producing the hormone aldosterone which plays the role of regulating the fluid level in the body. So when the organ gets fatigued due to regular stress, it produces less aldosterone and hence the body feels dehydrated. Thus one must avoid feeling stressed for long periods and try to find ways to unwind and relax.
