Often in times of illness or infections, we first seek out home remedies that are readily available before we take the appointment to meet the doctor and get prescribed medicines.
UTI (urinary tract infection) is one those conditions that is characterized by severe burning sensation while urination, very little urine release that is discolored, strange smelling & dark/bloody. This is accompanied with pain in the lower back or abdomen. So how can these symptoms are relieved without taking those antibiotics as UTI is caused due to bacteria in the bladder & urethra. Following are some of the home remedies that can help us get relief from the symptoms:
1. Drink More Water
Water is the most readily available source to flush out those bacteria causing UTI. It’s recommended to drink more than 8 glasses of cold water and keep drinking more to assist your system in relieving symptoms. Water also dilutes the urine and reduces the burning sensation.
2. Cranberry Juice
Sipping on cranberry juice is known to reduce UTI symptoms by preventing the adhesion of bacteria to the urinary bladder. Studies also show that the compounds in cranberry juice do not get digested after it is ingested rather it fights directly with the bacteria.
3. Eating Cucumbers
Cucumbers are known for their high water content and consuming cucumbers during the time of UTI helps in flushing out the toxins.
4. Baking Soda
Drinking half a teaspoon of baking soda mixed with a glass of water will soothe the burning sensation that accompanies UTI.
5. Parsley Water
Parsley water acts a diuretic (promotes urine production) and helps the kidneys in preventing the retention of sodium. This drink is made by adding one cup of fresh parsley to one to two cups of boiling water so the leaves can infuse the water. The resulting mixture is then strained and drunk warm or cold. Alternative to fresh parsley is two tablespoons of dried parsley powder.
6. Celery Seeds
Celery seeds also act as a diuretic like parsley. Chewing on handful of celery seeds after each meal not only aids in digestion but also helps in the symptoms of the urinary tract infection. If chewing the seeds is not to your taste, celery water can be made just like parsley water.
Eating blueberries provides the same benefits as that of cranberry juice which prevents the bacteria from sticking to the filaments in the urinary bladder and causing increased infection.
The idea is to fight the bad bacteria with good bacteria. To accomplish this, taking probiotics in the form of yoghurt with all meals and also as a mid-day snack proves beneficial.
9. Resist the Urge to Hold the Urine
Even if the pain prevents you from taking that visit to the restroom its best to release no matter how low the quantity of urine is. This helps in releasing the bacteria.
10. Avoid Irritants
Having irritants like caffeine, alcohol, carbonated beverages, artificial sweeteners and nicotine will further impair the body’s immune system and slow down healing of the infection.
