Eye strain has become a very common problem in this technical era especially amongst the professional people as they have to spend hours in front of the computers. There are many other reasons that can cause eye strain like lack of sleep, reading in low light, exposure to very bright light for a long duration or some other eye problem.
Eye strain can lead to headaches, redness or irritation in eyes and several other problems. The symptoms of eye strain are blurred vision, dry or watery eyes. Here are the top home remedies for reducing eye strain:
Massaging your eyes gently everyday can give you immense relief from eye strain. Gently massaging your eyelids and eyes with your fingers for 15 – 20 seconds can increase blood circulation to the eyes and also help in relaxation of the muscles around it. It also helps in the stimulation of tear glands and this prevents your eyes from drying.
If you have to work in front of the computer for long hours, then take breaks occasionally as that would help in relaxing your eye muscles. Try the following procedure – keep your elbows on the desk with your palms facing up. Loosen yourself and let your weight fall forwards. Now let you head fall on your palms and position your head in such a way that your palms cover your eyes and the fingers on your forehead. Now take a deep breath by closing your eyes and hold it for 5 seconds and then exhale. Repeat for 20 – 30 minutes. Do this several times a day.
This is a very simple technique and offers great results. Simply rub your hands (palms) against each other and place your warm palms on your eyes after closing them. Do not apply pressure keep the palms on your eyes for around 30 seconds. Open your eyes slowly and look around. Repeat this 3 – 5 times.
There are eye exercises that you can try for alleviating eye strain by improving blood circulation to your eyes. These would also help improve your focus and concentration levels. Take a pen or pencil and hold it at an arm’s length. Now focus on it. Now slowly, bring the object closer to your eyes as long as it is clearly visible. Now again move the object farther from your eyes. Repeat this 12 – 15 times. Rolling your eyes in anticlockwise and clockwise directions is also helpful.
Cold Water Therapy
Whenever your eyes feel tired and strained, you can splash some cold water on the face and this would give immediate relief. For a long lasting effect, you can take a wet soft washcloth and place it over your closed eyes for few seconds.
Take a towel and dip it in warm water. Wring the towel and cover your face with it for about a minute.
Avoid reading in low light conditions and also make sure that you are wearing the right eyewear.
