Gingivitis is a condition which is basically the inflammation of the gum tissue and affects a large part of the population. The source of the infection is bacteria which tend to inhibit the oral cavity and infect the teeth.  This gum problem is characterized by swelling or redness of the gums and also bleeding while brushing.

It can also lead to many serious conditions like chronic gingivitis which is also known as periodontitis.  There are many ways to treat gum infections but it is always better to follow home remedies to deal with it. The following are the most effective home remedies for gum infection.

Saline Solution

Using a saline solution can really help you cure a gum infection. For this, you need to first dissolve a teaspoon of salt in about ½ cup of warm water, mix and then rinse your mouth with it for about a minute.  Repeat this several times a day everyday and you will notice a difference in the pain and swelling.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera has many healing properties and one of them is that it helps to cleanse and soothe the gums. To use aloe vera for the gums, apply a small amount of it with your finger on the affected area do this for a few days and you will notice a major relief.


Sage is an excellent anti bacterial herb which too can be used to treat gingivitis.  To use this, you will first need to brew some fresh sage leaves in a glass of boiling water for about 10 minutes, let it cool down and then gurgle the infusion around your mouth about 2 to 3 times a day. You can also rub sage leaf on the gums and try to focus on the area which has inflammation.

Raw Honey

Honey has anti bacterial and anti inflammatory properties and this too can prove to be a great remedy to treat gum infections. You can apply raw honey directly on the affected area or mix it in warm water to drink it every day to find quick relief.


Garlic too is known to have many antibiotic effects. To use garlic, you can crush about one or two cloves of it and then place them on the infected gums.  You can also add a little bit of rock salt to garlic and then place this mixture on the affected part of the gums.  You can also mix it with honey, coconut oil/olive oil or even aloe vera for the best results.

Coconut Oil/Vitamin E Oil/Olive Oil

Coconut oil too is known to have anti bacterial properties and can be used to treat a lot of skin infections including gum infections. Even olive oil and vitamin E are great for the skin and the gums and can be used to treat gum infections. You can rub any of these oils directly to the affected area or swish them around in your mouth for some time.
