Curing Back Pain with Effective Home Remedies

Back pains are common health problems that are faced by people of all ages and it is most common amongst elderly and middle-aged people. Back pain can happen due to many reasons like improper diet, muscle tension, arthritis, lack of exercise, pregnancy and others.

Acute back pain can become chronic if not treated on time and it is best to avoid pain killers as these come with numerous side effects. Here are some effective home remedies that you can try for getting relief from back pain:

Ice Therapy

Ice is the best thing that you can give in the first 24 – 48 hours of any injury to keep the pain in control. Apply an ice pack over the area for 10 – 15 minutes and repeat this for at least 3 – 4 times. Many people do the mistake of applying warm compress and though this feels better on the pain, it does not help in relaxing the muscles and can actually increase your pain eventually.


Ginger root can provide relief from back pain as it is anti inflammatory in nature. Take some ginger paste and apply that over the area and follow up with eucalyptus oil application. Alternatively, you can also try drinking this mixture to get relief from pain. Simmer thinly sliced ginger root in boiling water for 15 minutes. Strain the liquid and let it cool. Add honey and drink it. Drink this 4 – 5 times in a day to get relief. Herbal tea made with ginger, cloves and peppercorns can also help.


It is important to keep moving your spine area like the rest of your body. Do not refrain from doing your daily activities and stay rigid. You can easily bend down to do tasks, walk your dog or go to work but be careful. Once, you feel better, you can start exercising and indulge in swimming and walking to keep back pain at bay.

Basil Leaves

If you are suffering for backache, then basil leaves can come to your rescue. Take 10 – 12 basil leaves and add to a cup of water. Boil this mixture unless the water evaporates to half. Now let the mixture cool and add a pinch of salt. Drink this concoction once for mild pain and twice for severe pain to get relief.


Garlic is also anti inflammatory in nature and thus can give you relief from back pain. You can simply eat 2 – 3 garlic cloves in empty stomach early in the morning or massage your back with garlic oil. Making garlic oil is easy. Take some coconut or mustard oil and add 8 – 10 garlic cloves while heating it. Strain and apply after it has cooled down.


Stretching exercises can also help give you relief from back pain. Do not just spend the entire day sitting on the chair. Get up after every 30 minutes and stretch backward and this would also prevent backache to a great extent.

Women suffering from back pain should avoid wearing high heels. It is important to watch your posture when you lift heavy weights as well.
