Angioplasty also called as balloon angioplasty is a procedure to treat arterial atherosclerosis or heart blockage.  The doctor schedules angioplasty when you are diagnosed with arteries blockage. Blockage in arteries stops the continuous blood flow to the heart. Valve blockage is a serious problem in patients. Immediate medical assistance is required when arterial valve blockage is diagnosed.

Atherosclerosis is a type of arteriosclerosis in which an artery wall thickens due to the accumulation of white blood cells (WBC). Accumulation of WBC along with proliferation of intimal-smooth muscle creates a plaque in the arteries. Formation of plaques can be removed with angioplasty.

Angioplasty or balloon angioplasty is a procedure where the catheter with a small balloon tip is inserted to the affected point. Once the catheter reaches the plaque, the balloon is inflated to compress plaques against the artery wall and stretches the artery resulting in increase blood flow to the heart.

The common questions you need to ask the doctor when you need to undergo angioplasty surgery are:

  • Why angioplasty is required for you?
  • Is there an alternative procedure apart from angioplasty to treat the heart disease?
  • Can I use regular medication instead of angioplasty?
  • Whether the hospital has experienced doctors to perform angioplasty?
  • How many doctors in a team are going to perform the surgery?
  • Whether the hospital has all the required medical supplies and equipments for angioplasty?
  • Is there an emergency available in case of complications during the surgery?
  • What are the benefits of angioplasty?
  • What are the benefits of angioplasty?
  • What are the common risks of angioplasty?
  • What are anaesthesia choices you have?
  • What are the chances of death during angioplasty?
  • What are the chances of an unsuccessful surgery?
  • What is the alternative for an unsuccessful surgery?
  • Will angioplasty save my life from early death?
  • How long the surgery will take?
  • Do you need stent or angioplasty alone is effective for curing?
  • What diagnostic tests are required prior to the surgery?
  • How long do you need to stay at the hospital before and after the surgery?
  • How long will it take to get back to normal routine after angioplasty?
  • Do you need to follow any particular diet before and after angioplasty?
  • What changes do you experience post surgery in your body?
  • Will there be any change in your medication after angioplasty?

  • What symptoms you should observe after angioplasty?
  • Are there any side effects post surgery?
  • What should you do to avoid future valve blockages?
  • What you should do if you experience severe pain during or post surgery?
  • Can you stop medication related to heart disease after angioplasty?
  • Does any other disease which I am affected with will have a side effect on angioplasty?
  • Do I need to do any special exercises post angioplasty?

Make sure you ask the doctor the above questions before undergoing angioplasty.
