Do you know there are millions of cases of unwanted pregnancy around the world and most of these are due to unprotected sexual intercourse? Not using a good method of contraception can lead to pregnancy for which you and your partner may not be ready.

Ofcourse, the best way to prevent this is to use protection but if you have already had sexual intercourse without using condoms or other forms of protection, then there are some ways in which you can still avoid pregnancy. If you are interested in knowing these ways, you can go through the following given information.

Emergency Birth Control Pills

Emergency birth control pills or morning after pills are those kinds of pills or medicines which work as emergency contraception and are to be taken after sex to avoid unwanted pregnancy. These pills consist of hormones which can avoid getting you pregnant and work as an emergency solution.  These cannot be considered as abortion pills because they avoid pregnancy from occurring and do not end it.  It is best to take these pills immediately after intercourse or within 24 hours. But most emergency birth control pills claim to decrease the chances of pregnancy even on taking them within 72 hours.

Do not Douche

After having unprotected sex, one must never douche. Douching may not increase the risk of getting pregnant but it can make a person prone to pelvic infections. Douching upsets the natural balance of bacteria as well as the yeast present in the reproductive tract which leads to infections.

Copper IUD

Another way to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex is to get a copper IUD inserted. This copper IUD can be inserted even within 5 days of unprotected sexual intercourse as it works by increasing the amount of cervical mucus and repelling the sperm. If this IUD is kept inside, it can be effective for more than 10 years.  Ofcourse, this is a more costly method of emergency birth control but is very effective and proves useful for several years.

Take a Test

Taking a pregnancy test will obviously not prevent pregnancy but is a good way to be sure whether you are pregnant or not. There are many pregnancy checking or testing kits available in the market and you can get one for yourself. To be sure, take the test multiple times.

Get a STD Test Done

Unprotected sex does not only pose the risk of pregnancy but also of several sexually transmitted diseases or STDs. Thus it is a good idea to visit a clinic and get an STD test done. This will help you know whether you free from the risk of infections or not.

Be Prepared for the Future

To avoid making the mistake again in the future, it is always best to see a doctor and ask for contraception methods. A condom may be effective but it may break, not work or may not be handy when needed. So, you must know about other contraception methods as well.
