177 Test Positive for Swine Flu; National Death Toll climbs to 600

swine_fluDelhi continues to reel under the winter onslaught of the H1N1 Swine Flu virus, and as many as 177 people tested positive for the infection; 120 among them being children, according to this news report. This is the highest number of people testing positive for the infection recorded in a single day.

‘About 176 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours. This is highest in one single day in the national capital till now,’ Anjana Prakash, Delhi’s assistant nodal officer for swine flu cases was reported as having said.

In a statement made by Delhi health minister, Kiran Walia, Swab samples of 177 people including 120 children tested positive for swine flu. According to the health minister, the total number of positive cases of H1N1 virus in the city mounted to 5,416. Of these 3,155 samples were of children alone. Owning to this situation in the national capital many schools are taking the precaution of shutting down and now four more schools; DPS Mathura Road, Frank Anthony and two other schools have done the same.

According to PTI, the official death toll from the swine flu pandemic in India has now touched the 600 mark. Yesterday 9 people succumbed to swine flu; 6 of those fatalities being from Rajasthan. 252 new cases were reported in the country, taking the total number of people affected with the contagious virus to 18,872.
