One of India’s leading pharma companies, Cipla has launched their version of Tamiflu, (the formulation Oseltamivir that is used to treat the H1N1 Swine flu virus) . Cipla’s anti swine flu drug is called Antiflu. According to company officials this is the only flu medicine from India that has been ‘prequalified’ by the WHO.
“We have launched Oseltamivir brand, called Antiflu, which is the only flu medicine from India to be prequalified by World Health Organisation (WHO),” Cipla’s Chairman and Managing Director, Y K Hamied said according to this NDTV report.
Antiflu will be available both in capsule as well as liquid form and will cost Rs. 475 for 10 capsules as well as the liquid. Cipla has the capacity to produce up to 2 million Antiflu (oseltamivir) pills in one month. The timing of the launch of the drug may be crucial as India is expecting the second wave of swine flu to commence along with the winter.
According to another report, Cipla has also offered export Antiflu to the US where there is currently shortage of the anti swine flu medication.
“Now the US is facing a shortage of oseltamivir and we have informed our readiness to supply the drug if needed,” said Hamied.
