Doctors Refuse to Treat Swine Flu Patient in Hyderabad Hospital

Swine fluDoctors at the Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad were reportedly not provided with the protective gear that would shield them from the H1N1 Swine flu virus and so they refused to treat the patients. Patients who had come for treatment of their swine flu like symptoms were demanding treatment which was refused by the doctors.

According to an earlier report, 14 junior doctors and three nurses at the Gandhi and Osmania hospitals tested positive for swine flu and this is what caused the Doctors, house surgeons, nurses and lab technicians of the swine flu screening ward in the hospital to refuse to work. The situation consists of  angry patients demanding treatment and doctors refusing to work in the absence of basic protective gear; both points of view not without their merit. And the lack of protective gear for the medical and health professionals is a significant problem especially in view of their colleagues having tested positive for Swine Flu.

The facilities provided to patients at these two hospitals is inadequate; and according to one nurse there are also problems with the isolation wards of these hospitals: the isolation ward in the Osmania General Hospital is not isolated enough from other wards. It was opened in a haphazard manner without even ventilators, which is causing more problems.
