There has recently been a high profile H1N1 Swine flu diagnosis in the country, that of the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi.
According to this BBC news report, the Gujarat CM tested positive for Swine flu on the day that he returned from his three day trip to Russia. He had been showing symptoms of cough and cold which is now being confirmed as having been caused by the Swine flu virus.
As of now the Swine flu toll in the country is over 365 and in Gujarat it is currently at 40 deaths.
Meanwhile there is progress being made on the vaccine front in the state of Gujarat where a vaccine is being developed using the most sophisticated technology called Virus Like Particles (VLP), according to this Economic Times report.
This technology has a potential of churning out large volumes of the vaccine, much faster than the conventional egg-based technology used world-wide. The timing of the development of this vaccine is even more important, because it is during the upcoming winter months when the H1N1 virus is most likely to proliferate.
An Ahmedabad-based manufacturer, Cadila Pharmaceuticals is said to be developing this vaccine in conjunction with a US based company.
