Pune was the first Indian city to report a Swine Flu fatality and is still the leading city in terms of numbers of people who have tested positive for the H1N1 Swine flu virus and deaths resulting therefore as well.
Now it would seem that Pune hotels are impacted by the advent of the swine flu not so much because of low occupancy but because of 40% of staff being on leave of absence. As reported here, the hotel staff have chosen to get out of Pune and to go to their home towns to escape the virus, according to this report. According to the report, 40 percent of the city’s hotel staff, who belong to Bengal and Nepal, have remained absent from work.
The hotels are also being affected by companies cancelling or postponing events which has meant lower occupancy and lower bookings of banquet halls and other hotel facilities.
It is estimated that losses to the industry are around 60 per cent. The hope expressed is that things will normalise after about 2 months. A worker at a prominent city club had recently died following being infected by the Swine flu virus and this has given rise to apprehension about virus as well.
