ICICI Lombard Offers Swine Flu Insurance

health insuranceThis one should reassure all those who are scared of being infected by the H1N1 Swine Flu virus: According to a report in the Times of India, ICICI Lombard is now offering insurance to cover expenses that can accrue from being infected by the virus. The insurance will cover hospitalisation expenses of swine flu patients in India and abroad for the infection which the World Health Organisation has called ‘Highly contagious’.

Ever since the first Swine flu death in the beginning of August in Pune, the insurance company has been receiving queries with regard to Swine flu coverage and so the company is now advertising that they also cover Swine Flu (and other infectious diseases) in their health insurance policy.

According to Dr Gustad Davar of Hinduja Hospital, “There is a fear among the public about swine flu. People are more cautious about the flu and the insurance company is trying to make the best use of this opportunity to register more people for their health insurance policy. This may be the marketing strategy, but at the end of the day, it is going to benefit the policy holder in his/her old age.”

The special feature of this policy is that if the policy holder travels abroad and has to have hospitalisation there due to Swine flu, he or she will be reimbursed for it. However the doubt has been expressed that when the number of claims increases, the insurance company will find it difficult and the insurance company may start rejecting the claims and then dispute between the client and company begins.

PTI reports that the countrywide death toll resulting from Swine is not up to 298. The number of confirmed total cases for swine flu has now reached nearly ten thousand and stands at 9,694.
