IIM – A Student Did not die from Swine Flu

IIM-AYesterday a student of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad died and concerns were raised that this could have been a death resulting from Swine Flu. Flu like symptoms such as fever were reported by Nikhil Kamat who was admitted to hospital and then shifted to another hospital where however he succumbed to his illness. Swabs were sent to the B J Medical college to see is the deceased had been infected by the H1N1 Swine Flu virus.

Today however reports have confirmed that it was not Swine flu that caused the death of IIM student Kamat. The swab taken turned out to be Swine flu negative according to the health authorities in Ahmedabad.

“Sample taken from Nikhil Kamat, the IIM-A student who died in the Sterling hospital today morning has turned out to be negative for swine flu infection,” principal secretary health Ravi Saxena said as reported by this Times of India article.

The actual reason for the student’s death was a rare blood disorder called Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), IIM-A sources said. due to this disorder, blood clots form in blood vessels throughout the body and these can then impede the flow of blood to all the major organs of the body such as the brain, kidneys, and heart and can lead to multiple organ failure and death.
