It has long been alleged by some medical experts that the H1N1 Swine Flu pandemic is getting more than its fair share of attention and budgetary allocation, often to the detriment of other health issues and diseases.
Recently the health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad was posed similar questions, as to why it is that separate swine flu wards were being set up whereas no such special attention was being paid to other killer diseases such as dengue. To this, the minister replied that this was because of the nature of swine flu, which was far more contagious and spread from person to person unlike dengue.
“We have funded separate swine flu wards in hospitals because it was highly contagious unlike dengue,” the minister was quoted as having said in this report. “This doesn’t imply that we are turning a blind eye to the dengue situation. People need to be aware that they should maintain hygienic conditions and not allow breeding of mosquitoes. We have to adopt a separate strategy to tackle the diseases since both are very different. In dengue’s case, we need to control the breeding and larvae (of the Aedes mosquito),” he added.
