According to fresh report about the H1N1 Swine Flu vaccine from NDTV, Pune based Serum Institute has developed a nasal vaccine for swine flu that is now ready for trials. This vaccine seed has been got from Russia and is reportedly safe and easy to deliver. This form of vaccination will give a person local immunity; i.e. immunity around the nose and mouth area. There are said to be plusses as well as downsides to this form of vaccination:
- This vaccine is local in nature and offers limited immunity compared to the injectible form of the swine flu vaccine
- Nasal vaccines are uncommon in India and it is not clear how well this one will work; whether it will generate sufficient immunity
- There is also the worry that nasal vaccines can actually suppress the immune response
- Injectible vaccines can cause shock or death in extreme cases, which problem will not occur with nasal vaccines.
- Serum institute claims that more than three and a half lakh such vaccines can be produced in just two days by them, which is another big plus since this will make the vaccine accessible quickly to large parts of the population.
