A PTI report today has said that experts are warning the health ministry and government agencies against a second wave of the Swine flu pandemic, “which might be highly pathogenic and have a high fatality rate”. The government has therefore been advised to be prepared for any eventuality.
There is also the apprehension that the strain may become resistant to currently prescribed antiviral drugs such as Tamiflu.
The second wave may be linked to the delayed south west monsoon and may then continue as endemic influenza for an unpredictable duration, according to an Indian Council for Medical Research journal report .
