With Goa’s neighbouring states, Karnataka and Maharashtra the leaders in reporting positive H1N1 Swine Flu cases as well as the highest number of deaths resulting from the infection; it was only a matter of time before Goa reported its first suspected death from the virus. A 67 year old man died in a Goa hospital on Saturday. He had arrived from Bangalore and was suffering from high fever.
According to this report, it is now Goa, one of the most popular destinations in India for foreign tourists, that is on the Swine Flu detection radar and tourists will now routinely be screened for Swine flu. State health minister Vishwajeet Rane has said that thermal scanners will be installed at airports to screen arriving tourists for the infection.
As of Sunday, the health ministry, the death toll of swine flu victims climbed to over 60 and the total number of infected people now approaches 3000.
More than 20 lakh people visit Goa every year and among those about 4 lacs are foreigners, making tourism the main industry of the state. So it is in the interests of the public that swine flu is contained and controlled. An outbreak would be disastrous not only for the local population but also for the state’s economy.
