In a unique contemporary twist to the tradition of garba and raas during the Navratri festival in Gujarat, in South Gujarat town of Bharuch the usual garba renditions have been at least partly replaced with songs about swine flu, terrorism and global warming. According to a report in the Times of India, these current affairs related compositions are meant to increase awareness about these perils among people.
Sample these lyrics:
Bhai Tame oo Ben tame,
khasi, udras ane tav chhe toy
kem chaliya re Garba ramva re lol
(which translates as Brothers and sisters you have cough, cold and fever, then why are you going to play Garba?)
According to Falguni Bhesaniya of Vadodara, who has written and composed the songs, an event like the Navratri festival is an ideal place spread the message and increase awareness about the H1N1 Swine Flu virus because so many people congregate together for the event every day. These are key issues of public importance and using the simple vehicle of a song, the message is disseminated to all.
“Public awareness is the best weapon to fight against issues like swine flu, terrorism and global warming and as an artiste I am spreading awareness through my writing skill,” said Falguni.
