The World Health Organization has warned today that South East Asia may see a huge uptrend in Swine Flu infections in the coming winter months. Nations of the region were told to continue taking measures to combat the spread of the H1N1 Swine Flu virus.
“WHO continues to closely monitor the geographical spread of the pandemic and member states will need to continue updating their plans accordingly,” the UN body’s regional director Samlee Plianbangchang said, as reported by the Business Standard.
The virus is being monitored for genetic mutation and drug resistance and is unique and different from other flu viruses in that the H1N1 has spread faster than any other flu in the past. Therefore there is the need to utilize public health measures combined with a sound strategy for case management can control and mitigate the impact on human health and economy, according to the report.
public health measures such as frequent hand washing, respiratory hygiene, cough etiquette and social distancing measures such as voluntary isolation for slowing down the surge, have been once again emphasized by the representatives of WHO.
“The UN health agency has been actively assisting in vaccine production capacity in the region, and three companies have been authorised to produce vaccine to make available 220 million doses per annum,” WHO said.
