Why are Pune and Bangalore the Swine Flu Capitals of India?
The highest number of fatalities resulting from the H1N1 Swine Flu pandemic in India, are concentrated in the cities of Pune and Bangalore. Though these cities are in neighbouring states of Maharashtra and Karnataka respectively they are geographically distant from each other and so there are reasons other than that for these particular cities having a high concentration of the virus:
- Both cities have pleasant, cool climate and even in summer, the heat conditions are not as bad as they are in other parts of the country. The Swine Flu virus cannot survive in very hot weather, slightly cooler climes are more hospitable for it to spread. This is the reason that even in temperate regions or the northern hemisphere, it was being predicted that autumn, when the weather would cool down somewhat, there would be a resurgence of the Swine flu virus. By contrast as the Southern Hemisphere (particular the countries of South America) moved towards less cold weather, there was seen to be a decrease in the incidence of Swine Flu cases.
- Both cities have large ‘floating populations’ of itinerant individuals who move in and out of the city. For instance Bangalore, which is known as the IT capital of the country has a large number of professionals who do a lot of work related travel; a lot of it to and from various different countries as well. In fact it is true that the Karnataka government is also of the view that it is the IT professionals who are responsible for the Swine Flu in Bangalore.
- There is a delay in treatment since there is excessive pressure on public health care services and people also tend to panic because of this.
As of now, 79 people have died from Swine flu in Karnataka (a large majority in Bangalore) and in Pune 58 people have succumbed to Swine Flu.
