The first Indian company to file for clinical trial protocol for H1N1 Swine flu vaccine with the Drug Controller General is pharmaceutical company Zydus. This is not the only Ahmedabad company that is developing a Swine flu vaccine, another Gujarat company, Cadila is also developing a vaccine against the H1N1 Virus.
In addition, there are companies such as Bharat Biotech, Panacea Biotech and Serum Institute of India, a Pune based company who are all in the race to develop a safe and efficacious Swine flu vaccine. Whereas earlier the Pune company Serum Institute was claiming that they would be the first to enter the Indian market with an indigenously developed swine flu vaccine, it would now seem that this claim is being made by Zydus who is currently in collaboration with European biotech company BioCryst Pharmaceuticals for the development of the H1N1 vaccine., according to this Economic Times report.
Meanwhile the death toll from Swine flu is inching closer to the 500 mark with one more death yesterday taking the count up to 485 in the country. There are reportedly 100 swine flu deaths in Pune according to this PTI report and the city is gearing up for more swine flu cases in the upcoming winter.
