A long awaited sports tournament is approaching, and one of your favourite players can’t play in that because of injuries. Does this experience ring a bell? I am sure we all must have experienced this disappointment now and then!!

There are multiple types of injuries that can happen to a sportsperson and make them unable to participate. These injuries can happen to anyone who plays sports on a regular basis or even in individuals who are new to the sport and not used to the methods of it. These injuries mostly happen because of poor training, lack of the technicality in playing, or mere accidently.

Let’s discuss most common injuries that can happen in sports:

Strain and Sprain

The most commonly and repetitively occurring sports injury is strain or sprains. Usually sprains happen to the various ligaments. Ligaments of the ankle, knee or wrists when get overstretched or torn partially, it is known as a sprain.  When the muscle attached gets stretched or pulled, it is known as strain in the muscle. These injuries can range from minute to severe depending on the damage to the ligament and muscles. The treatment would be to apply liniment or ointment and a crepe bandage. Give rest to the sprained or strained joint. If the pain is severe, then pain killers can also be advised.

Knew Injuries

Knee injuries are also common in all the sports. The knee joint a lot of ligaments. Most commonly injured ligament anterior cruciate ligament most commonly known as ACL. This injury is one of the most serious injuries that can happen to a sportsman. These ligaments hold the bones forming the knee joint together. Many times improper twisting of the knee occurs while playing sports, which leads to injury to the ligaments. Other ligaments like posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), medial collateral ligament (MCL), and lateral collateral ligament (LCL) can also get injured in sports. Runners also face an issue in which there is pain near the knee cap also known as runner’s knee. The treatments for these injuries take a long duration of the time. If the tear in the ligament is partial then reconstruction of the ligaments can be done. If the ligament is torn beyond repair then the ligament is replaced. A lot of rest and physiotherapy is required to acquire the full use of the leg and again be fit for the sports.

Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow is known as epicondylitis in medical terms. This injury is most common in the tennis players hence the name. It does not mean that it cannot happen to anyone else. The epicondyle (a part of the elbow) can get inflamed after repetitive use such as in golf or tennis. “Sachin tendulkar”, the famous Indian cricketer also had suffered from tennis elbow. The treatment involves rest to the elbow and painkiller and anti inflammatory medicines.

Rotator Cuff Injuries

Rotator cuff is the group of the muscles around the shoulder joint. Excessive strain or repetitive use of these muscles can lead to rotator cuff injuries. These injuries are almost common in all kinds of sports activity. Many times this can also lead to shoulder dislocation. Rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE) are the main stay of the treatment. If the injuries are serious then it might need surgical interventions.

These are the most common sports injuries. Other injuries also include back pain, hamstrings, fractures and dislocations. Doing proper exercises prior to a game, staying fit, and a healthy diet are necessary to acclimatise the muscles of the body in order to avoid these injuries is necessary.
